The Open Position

The Open Position

The open position of the guitar contains the notes of the open strings and the first three frets. Outlined next are the position of these notes on the staff, tab, and on the fretboard. Two octaves of notes are shown in this example. An octave is the distance in pitch between two notes that have the same letter name and are eight consecutive notes apart. Notes that are 1 octave apart are given the same letter note name as they sound the same but are higher or lower in pitch.
