INTRODUCTION

Lesson 2/52 | Study Time: 5 Min
Course: Keyboard
INTRODUCTION

Progressive Keyboard Method is an easy and enjoyable introduction to keyboard playing for the student with no previous musical knowledge. The book covers the basics of how to read music, chords and scales in three major keys and one minor key, as well as an introduction to left hand accompaniment styles and techniques. The examples can be played on either a piano or any type of keyboard or synthesizer.

Exercises are presented in a progressive manner, targeting specific techniques and complemented with a variety of well known melodies for a balanced and enjoyable approach to learning. New notes and rhythms are introduced one at a time early in the book so that each new topic can be clearly understood and used immediately to make music. The demands of playing with both hands are increased gradually, beginning with single notes in the left hand part before moving on to chords and a variety of accompaniment techniques such as arpeggio and broken chord styles. A variety of chord sounds are used, including major, minor and dominant seventh chords. Each one is shown in easy fingering positions. Along with the chords, the student is introduced to modal five fingering positions on the white keys, opening up possibilities for experimentation and improvisation.

As well as learning a variety of sounds, the student will gain confidence in moving up and down the keyboard with both hands and have an enjoyable introduction to several styles of music, both popular and classical. By the end of the book, the student will be able to obtain much enjoyment from their keyboard playing and will be ready for more advanced study such as specific styles of music.

To develop a good sense of timing right from the beginning, it is recommended that you use a metronome with everything you practice. A good teacher can also help you progress much faster than you can on your own.
