Progressive Rock Saxophone Method is specifically designed for students who wish to play Rock sax, either in a Rock group or solo for fun. The emphasis is on making music immediately. The exercises sound great as well as teaching the necessary notes and techniques. Although the book starts with the basics, it will be useful to have some knowledge of elementary saxophone playing before tackling the exercises in this book. Progressive Beginner Saxophone is recommended as a primer to this book.
Starting with the Blues scale and basic eighth note rhythms, this book moves through a variety of sounds, rhythms and techniques in a progressive manner. The book also contains lessons on transposing, playing in all keys and improvisation and contains lots of great sounding riffs and solos. Anyone who completes this book will be well on the way to being an excellent Rock sax player. To continue your study of Rock sax playing, it is recommended that you move on to Progressive Rock Saxophone Technique on completion of this book. It covers topics such as sixteenth note rhythms, note bending, upper register playing, double and triple tonguing, articulations, chord construction, ear training and a variety of other important subjects, along with lots more great riffs and solos.
To improve your skills even further it is recommended that you use a metronome or drum machine with all the examples in the book. It would also be helpful to play along with the recording that accompanies the book. If you are serious about music, a good teacher can often help you progress much quicker than you can on your own.
Keep practicing, keep playing and have fun, Peter Gelling.
