Classical Guitar Pieces

Lesson 2/54 | Study Time: 5 Min
Classical Guitar Pieces

Classical Guitar Pieces

At this stage it will be possible to try your first full length Classical guitar piece. Waltz and Variation by Fernando Carulli uses all the techniques you have studied so far.

New Chords

Three new chord shapes appear in Waltz. The A Minor (Am), E Seventh (E7) and G Major (G).

Am

E7

G

D.C. al Fine

Over bar 24, the instruction D.C. al Fine is written. This means that you play the song again from the beginning until you reach the word Fine .

The following pieces use notes and techniques studied throughout the book. The first piece introduces % time, two beats to each bar. Andantino is a common name for a music study that indicates the tempo of the piece. Andantino comes from another music term "Andante" which means moderately slow. Andantino is slightly faster than Andante.

Special attention should be given to the left hand chord shape at the end of bar 14. This chord shape will prove to be difficult at first. Make sure you use the suggested fingers and your left hand is in the correct position.

The following piece "Waltz" by Ferdinand Carulli uses a strict arpeggio pattern.

Study in A minor (Am) features a new note in bar 3. The note B (normally played as an open string) can also be played on the 3rd string, 4th fret. This enables you to fret the note B and D (2nd string, 3rd fret) at the same time. Take care with the first shape in bar 6. Make sure you hold the F note (4th string, 3rd fret) for the duration of the first two beats of the bar. The key of Am is the relative key of C major. Relative keys are discussed in detail in Lesson 12.

The Flat Sign

This is a flat sign.

A flat sign written before a note on the staff means that you play the note that is one fret lower than the note written. For example, the note written on the following staff is called G flat (Gb), and is played on the second fret of the 1st string. When a flat sign is written on the staff, it is always written before a note.

Study in C features a G flat. Try to play all the notes clearly and hold each note for its correct time value, particularly the F note on the 4th string, 4th fret, as highlighted in the music.
