3rd Intervals

Lesson 2/45 | Study Time: 5 Min
3rd Intervals

3rd Intervals

Another common sound in Country music, particularly in melody playing, is the use of 3rd intervals. The distance between the root and third of a chord is a 3rd, as is the distance between the third and the fifth. These intervals are shown here for the chords C, F and G. If you are not familiar with intervals, see Progressive Music Theory.

This example demonstrates the C major scale harmonized in 3rds. The whole example can be played with the second and fourth fingers of the right hand.

As you play the next example, listen to the sound created by moving between blue notes and major scale notes with 3rds.

This solo combines the sound of a melody harmonized in 3rds with another typical Country left hand pattern. Practice each hand separately at first if necessary.
