Moving Between Forms

Moving Between Forms

When playing licks or solos it is common to move between the various forms (patterns) of a scale by sliding from one to the next. Here is a commonly used scale pattern (Sliding Pattern 1) which moves between several forms of the A minor pentatonic scale. The arrows on the diagram indicate the most common notes to slide to or from when changing positions.

Here is a lick which makes use of this sliding scale pattern. Once you have the scale memorized, try creating your own licks from it.

Sliding Pattern 2

The following diagram shows another sliding pentatonic scale pattern which is useful for moving between the C, A and G forms of the scale. As with the previous pattern, learn it from memory and then experiment with it to create your own licks.
