Shuffle Rhythm
The shuffle rhythm is a variation of triplet timing. It is created by not playing the middle note of the triplet group. This can be achieved by using a tie or an eighth rest, e.g., if the middle note of the triplet in the riff used in the 12 Bar Blues above is removed, the following shuffle rhythms are created.
Try the 12 Bar Blues in Exercise 45, using these two shuffle rhythms.
The following Blues in A uses a two bar riff. This riff uses a shuffle rhythm in the first beat of each bar. Also the last beat in the second bar of the riff is played staccato, as indicated by the dot placed above it.
