One of the most popular sounds used in electric guitar playing is distortion. This is achieved by overdriving an amp (turning the pre-amp volume up and the master volume down) or by using a distortion pedal.
Pedals have a variety of controls, but usually include drive or distortion (the amount of distortion), tone (amount of treble or bass frequencies) and level or output (overall volume level). These are called parameters. They enable you to control and shape the sound to your personal taste. There are many different pedals available and it is best to try out several different ones before buying one.
To achieve distortion sounds with an amp, turn your master volume down and your pre-amp volume up.
Here is another example using the same notes, but sounds great using an overdriven sound. Set your amp or pedal to an overdrive effect, and try playing this with a click or drum beat.
