INTRODUCTION

Lesson 2/38 | Study Time: 5 Min
INTRODUCTION

The bass player, together with the drummer, form what is called the "rhythm" section of a group. They create the backing beat, driving force and "tightness" necessary for a successful group.

Progressive Beginner Slap Bass is suitable for beginners, but it would be preferable to have some knowledge of bass playing before starting this book. Progressive Beginner Bass is suggested as a primer. During the course of Progressive Beginner Slap Bass, you will learn basic slapping and popping techniques as well as a variety of articulations and left hand techniques which will make your playing come alive and sound more professional.

Along the way you will learn many exciting bass lines which make use of these techniques and cover all of the common note and rest values used in music, along with the scales, arpeggios and fingering patterns used by the world’s best bass players. A variety of styles are covered including Heavy Rock, Pop Rock, Funk, Blues and R&B.

There is also a lesson on how to work with a drummer. All the examples sound great and are fun to play. Anyone who completes this book will be well on the way to being an excellent Slap bass player.

The best and fastest way to learn is to use this book in conjunction with:

  • Buying sheet music and song books of your favorite recording artists and learning to play their songs.
  • Practicing and playing with other musicians. You will be surprised how good a basic drums/bass/guitar combination can sound even when playing easy music.
  • Learning by listening to your favorite recordings and playing along with them.

Particularly in the early stages it is helpful to have the guidance of an experienced teacher. This will also help you keep to a schedule and obtain weekly goals. To ensure that you develop a good sense of time, it is essential to work with a metronome or drum machine every time you practice.
