Five Patterns For Arpeggios

Lesson 7/38 | Study Time: 5 Min
Five Patterns For Arpeggios

Five Patterns For Arpeggios

As mentioned earlier in this lesson, the five basic fingering patterns apply to any type of scale or arpeggio. The following diagrams show the five patterns of a G7 arpeggio. As with all new patterns you learn, transpose them to several other keys once you have them memorized.

Pattern 1

Pattern 2

Pattern 3

Pattern 4

Pattern 5

The following diagram shows the positions of the root notes from all five patterns. The positions of these root notes never change, regardless of the type of scale or arpeggio being played.

The positions of the other notes may change, but the root notes don’t. Because of this, they form a framework around which any bass line can be built. For this reason, it is essential to memorize the positions of these root notes.

Try visualizing them with your eyes closed, or while you are away from the bass (e.g., while waiting for a bus). Name the positions (string and fret number) of the notes in a particular key until you can do it instantly. When you can do this, move on to another key. Keep working at this bit by bit until you know all the root note positions for all 12 keys.
