Identifying Scale Patterns

Identifying Scale Patterns

If you look at the positions of the root notes (key notes) in the previous scale pattern, you will notice that they form a triangular pattern.

The following diagrams show the basic E chord and E form bar chord (root 6). You can see that the root notes are in the same positions as they are in the scale pattern. As a result, the previous scale pattern can be described as the E form of the scale. This is the form you already know as pattern 1.

E Form

Here is a solo in the key of C. All the notes in the solo come from the C minor pentatonic scale. It makes use of almost all of the techniques you have learned.

You should also experiment with the phrases within the solo and create variations on them to invent your own licks. It is also important to try them out in different keys. Make a habit of this with everything you learn.
