When using Pattern 1 to improvise against a 12 Bar Blues progression the following notes can be added to the pattern. This creates what is known as the Blues scale and it is shown in the fifth position on the following fretboard diagram.
To play this Blues scale, commence on the keynote. Play the notes of this scale against a 12 Bar Blues in the key of A.
Here is a Blues lick that uses notes from the Blues scale. The lick is shown at the fifth position and would be used to improvise against a 12 Bar Blues in the key of A. The Blues scale also works well against minor key progressions.
Once you have practiced this lick, play it in different keys and jam along with the 12 Bar Blues Progressions and the Minor Key Progressions at the end of this lesson.
