It is important to be able to shift between one chord pattern to the next. To practice this, shift between the F and G notes on the D string.
Start with the 2nd finger of your left hand on the 3rd fret on the D string (F note) then, without changing the shape of your hand (i.e. don’t stretch your fingers) move it until you reach the new note G on the 5th fret of the same string. Have your 2nd finger lightly touching the string when shifting between the notes. Your thumb should also move with your hand. Repeat this movement several times backwards and forwards between the two notes until it feels comfortable and natural.
The example below gives you practice shifting between the F and G arpeggios introduced previously. Note that this example is the same chord progression as Example 42. The G chord this time is played by shifting the F arpeggio up 2 frets.
