INTRODUCTION

Lesson 2/31 | Study Time: 5 Min
Course: Rock Drums
INTRODUCTION

Progressive Beginner Rock Drumming is suitable for beginners, but it would be preferable to have some knowledge of basic drumming before starting this book. Progressive Beginner Drums is suggested as a primer. During the course of Progressive Beginner Rock Drumming, you will learn drum beats and fills using all of the common note and rest values used in music, along with independence techniques, rudiments and combinations of sounds used by the world’s best drummers.

A variety of styles are covered including Heavy Rock, Pop Rock, Funk, Blues and R&B, which are the roots of most of today’s Rock styles. You will also learn a complete system for learning, counting and analyzing grooves based on any note value, as well as enabling you to create your own beats, fills and solos. All the examples sound great and are fun to play. The book also covers music theory as it applies to drumming. Anyone who completes this book will be well on the way to being an excellent Rock drummer.

The best and fastest way to learn is to use this book in conjunction with:

  • Buying sheet music and song books of your favorite recording artists and learning to play their songs,
  • Practicing and playing with other musicians. You will be surprised how good a basic drums/bass/guitar combination can sound even when playing easy music.
  • Learning by listening to your favorite recordings and playing along with them.

In the early stages it is particularly helpful to have the guidance of an experienced teacher. This will also help you keep to a schedule and obtain weekly goals. To ensure that you develop a good sense of time, it is essential to work with a metronome or drum machine every time you practice.
