Using a Tuner

Lesson 3/39 | Study Time: 5 Min
Course: Ukulele Chords
Using a Tuner

Using a Tuner

Before you begin each lesson or practice session you will need to tune your instrument. If it’s out of tune, everything you play will sound incorrect even though you are playing the correct notes.

It is possible to tune your instrument by ear, but this can be difficult for beginners and take many months to master. For ease of use and convenience, we suggest you either purchase an electronic tuner from a music instrument store or download a tuning app onto your smartphone or tablet. There are many paid and free app options and we recommend Cleartune by BitCount (Android/ iOS) or PolyTune by TC Electronic (iOS).

A tuner shows you whether the pitch of the note you are playing is sharp (too high), flat (too low) or in tune. Once your instrument has been tuned correctly it should only need minor adjustments before each practice session - and remember that it might only be one string that’s out of tune. If you are a beginner, it is best to have your teacher tune your instrument for you, and help you to learn to tune the instrument until you are confident that you can do it yourself.
