Swing Rhythms

Lesson 2/45 | Study Time: 5 Min
Swing Rhythms

Swing Rhythms

A swing rhythm can be created by tying together the first and second notes of an eighth note triplet. Play example 32 which contains triplets.

Example 33 has the first and second notes of each triplet group tied. Do not play the second note of the triplet group. Play the first and third notes only. This gives the example a "swing feel".

The two eighth notes in the triplets tied together in example 34 can be replaced by a quarter note.

To simplify notation, it is common to replace the zwith 6, and to write at the start of the piece, 6 = z as illustrated in example 35.

The previous three examples sound exactly the same, but are just written differently.
