By now you should be getting pretty good at playing the shuffle in the keys of both C and G. In this lesson you will learn a new rhythm pattern called the New Orleans Rhumba. When playing shuffles, all of the 8th notes are swung. However, with this new rhythm we will be using straight 8th notes. Practice once again the difference between straight and swing 8th notes.
One of the most distinctive elements of the New Orleans Rhumba sound is the bass line which is played by the left hand. Here it is in the key of C.
Practicing the last four bars of any 12 Bar Blues is a useful exercise, as it covers all three chords as well as the turnaround.
In this example the left hand plays the rhumba bass line and the right hand plays 7th chords.
