Here are two new expressive techniques to add expression to your playing - the rake and the trill. The rake involves fretting a note and laying a finger (or fingers) across two or three adjacent strings. The pick is then raked across the strings, causing a muted sound leading up to the original note which is left ringing. A rake is indicated by an arrow in the tablature pointing up to the note to be raked.
The trill is a rapid succession of hammer-ons and pull-offs, with only the first note being picked. The trill is indicated by the symbol tr above or below the two notes concerned, with the first note being shown as a grace note.
Here is a lick using the Blues scale in the key of E, which features both the rake and the trill. Experiment with these techniques to create some licks of your own.
