There are several different types of harmonicas and each one has its own unique sound. In this book you will learn how to play the diatonic ten hole harmonica, and the chromatic harmonica. Both are shown in the photos below.
Diatonic harmonicas are the most common and are best for note bending and Blues playing as well as Country and Folk music. They are tuned in one specific key, although it is possible to play in at least four different keys on one diatonic harmonica. The first three sections of the book deal with diatonic harmonica playing using a C harmonica.
The final section of the book deals with chromatic harmonica playing. Chromatic harmonicas are often associated with more complex styles such as Jazz, but are also used in Soul, R&B and Pop (e.g. Stevie Wonder). The chromatic harmonica is not usually associated with note bending. In fact, bending notes on a chromatic harmonica can damage the instrument. It is possible to play in all keys on the chromatic harmonica by using the slide, which is depressed (pushed in) to create extra notes
