PART TWO

Lesson 2/11 | Study Time: 5 Min
PART TWO

The songs of Part Two can be played after completion of Lessons Nine through Eleven of the Progressive Harmonica Method. These songs are also rhythmically simple, with only one note per beat. However, some require increased ability to obtain single notes, and utilize a greater range of notes, including those of the high end of the harmonica.

When using the high notes of the harmonica, and especially the high inhale notes, a very low volume of air will produce a clearer and purer tone than a larger air volume, so play them gently.

Did this traditional song provide Elvis Presley with the melody for Love Me Tender? Whether or not it did, strive to obtain single notes when playing this song, and use a staccato effect, especially on the repeated 8e notes of the first part of the second line. You may wish to practice the move from 8i to 6i to 8i before attempting the entire song.

This easy but pleasing blues song utilizes the popular Twelve Bar Blues format. For many more blues songs, see Progressive Blues Harmonica and The Progressive Blues Harmonica Lick and Solo Book, from which this song is taken.

The notation for this song uses "alternate endings", as indicated by the brackets marked 1 and 2. Observe the repeat sign at the end of the eighth bar. To play this song, play the first six bars, then play the seventh and eighth bars (which fall under the bracket marked 1, ending at the repeat sign. Return to the beginning of the song, as the repeat sign directs you. Now play the first six bars again, skip over the bars under the bracket marked 1, and play bars nine and ten (which fall under the bracket marked 2. Then continue without pause through bar eleven and the rest of the song.
