Different fingerings can sometimes be used when playing chords, to make a chord progression easier. For example, play Exercise 70 with the alternative fingering for the Em chord. You will notice that a pivot finger can be now used between each chord change.
This will make the changes easier, faster and smoother. Note that the chord shape does not change, only the fingering. Generally it is best to use the usual fingerings, but occasionally, as in Exercise 70, alternative fingerings are more convenient.
