The following diagram illustrates the notes D, E, F and G on the third string. Play them with the fingers indicated on the diagram and below the Tab notation. As with all new notes, name them out loud as you play until you know them from memory.
This example uses all four notes on the third string as well as notes on the second string. Sing the names of the notes out loud as you play. Once you are comfortable with the whole example, try playing it with your eyes closed and visualize the fretboard positions as you play. This will help you develop the link between your ears, brain and hands.

Tells you there are three beats in each bar.
There are three quarter notes in one bar of ^ time.
A dot written after a note extends its value by half.
A dot after a half note means that you hold it for three beats.
One dotted half note makes one bar of music in ^ time.
