Although most melodies can be harmonized using only primary triads, the chords built on the supertonic ( II ), mediant ( III ), submediant ( VI ) and leading note ( VII ) can also used to create different sounds and atmospheres in the music. The chords built on these degrees are called secondary triads. The next example shows the melody from example 64 with secondary triads from the key added to the harmony. Play the two versions and listen to the different atmosphere that is created by changing the harmony.
