Understanding the Diagrams

The numbers on the fingers show which fingers should be used to press down the keys as shown in the fingering diagrams at the bottom of the page.

How To Hold The Recorder

To learn how to hold the recorder, it is best to place your hands in position to play the note B. The first step is to cover the hole at the back of the recorder with your left thumb and cover the top hole on the front of the recorder with the first finger of your left hand. In this position, you have the fingering for the note B as shown in the diagram. Next place your right thumb on the back of the recorder lower down the body. The main role of the right thumb is to support the weight of the recorder as you play.
