Open Tuning Licks - Open E/D Tuning
The next section of licks are played in open "E" tuning. The strings are tuned (beginning from the sixth string) to E, B, E, G#, B and E. Although the following licks are written for open "E" tuning, they may also be used when playing in open "D" tuning. To tune to open "D" the strings will become (beginning from the sixth string) D, A, D, F#, A and D. You may notice that the notes for open "D" are all 2 frets lower than the open "E" tuning, so therefore there is no practical difference between these tunings. Open E/D Tuning Licks
The following licks are played in open "E" or open "D" tuning. Both scale positions have been used along with a variety of different slide techniques. Licks 40-43 are based around the second position scale, as shown on the previous chart.
Licks numbered 44-47 are played in the open position. Refer to the open E/D tuning scale chart at the beginning of this section which outlines this position.
The next four licks are played in open E/D tuning but are based around the chords found on the fifth and seventh frets-A Major and B Major if you are in open E tuning - G Major and A Major if you are in open D tuning.
