Another common technique used in keyboard playing is to play chords with the right hand and to play the root note of the chord with the left hand. The easiest way to start learning chords with the right hand is to memorize the chord shapes you already know and move them further up the keyboard.
The fingering for each chord will change when you use the right hand, but the chord shape remains the same. The next example contains the chords C, F and G in root position, played first by the left hand and then the right hand. Both hands use the first, third and fifth fingers to play the chords, but the order is reversed for each hand, i.e., left hand – 5, 3, 1, right hand – 1, 3, 5.
In the following example the chords C, F and G are played by the right hand while the left hand plays the root notes of the chords. The two hands alternate to create a rocking back and forth effect. This style works well when accompanying a singer or a lead instrument such as a guitar or saxophone.
