The following piece features a new time signature which is a variation on the Common time symbol, but this one has a vertical line through it W. This is called cut common time, or simply cut time. It is also called $ time and represents two half note beats per bar. In this situation, each half note receives one count. Whole notes receive two counts, while quarter notes receive half a count. This is a traditional church melody arranged as a chorale (choir or choral style piece) by 19th century composer Robert Schumann. The chords are made up of four individual voice parts - two played by each hand. It also features the fermata or pause.
