The seven different modes can be derived any major scale, not just C major. The order of modes remains the same, but the starting note for each one will be different from one key to the next. The following example demonstrates the seven modes derived from the Bb major scale. Listen to how well each one works over its particular scale tone 7th chord. This is because the note on each beat of the bar is a note of the arpeggio of its corresponding chord. The other notes of each mode can be thought of as passing notes.
