The Tie
A tie is a curved line joining two or more notes of the same pitch, where the second note(s) is not played, but its time value added to that of the first note.

Bass Part - The last note of bar 1 and the first note of bar 2 are tied together in this example.
Drum Part - An extra snare drum beat (beat ‘4 +’) is added to the first bar of this example and then tied to the first snare drum of the second bar. The bass drum in bar 2 begins on an ‘offbeat’.
Dotted Quarter Note
The dotted quarter note is equal to a quarter note plus an eighth note in value.
