Pick Up
A pick up is any notated material which is played before the bar lines. A pick up is not played when repeat signs are taken.
Hammer-on* (Bass Only)
This symbol indicates that a ‘hammer-on' is to be used. A hammer-on is where the force of your 'fretting' finger generates the sound of a note.

Bass Part - This two bar phrase begins with a pick up and also uses a 'hanner-on' technique.
Drum Part - The hi-hat opening in this example is synchronised with a snare drum hit instead of the bass drum (as in example 19).

Bass Part - A hammer-on occurs in the second bar of this example.
Drum Part - A ill?is introduced over the last two beats of bar 2 in this example. A drum TilP is a rhythmical variation of a particular pattern. Any kit part or combination of kit parts may be used. In this case the snare drum and small tom-tom are used.
