The chord symbol for an augmented chord is + or aug. Here is the most common chord shape for the augmented chord.
D+/F#+/Bb+
The augmented chord can take its name from any note in the chord, e.g., the shape shown here contains the notes D, F#, and Bb (twice). This chord can either be Daug (D+), F#aug or Bbaug. This shape is movable so it can be played in any position. If this shape was moved up one fret, it would be Ebaug, Gaug (G+) or Baug (B+) etc. To locate any augmented chord, simply play the movable version of the augmented shape so that it includes the letter name of the chord.
C+/E+/Ab+
If the previous chord was moved two frets higher to achieve Caug, Eaug or Abaug, it would be hard to play and sound thin. The chord shown here sounds much better and is easier to play.
