Alternate picking

The next step is to play the scale ascending and descending using alternate picking (alternating down and up strokes of the pick) as shown below. Alternate picking is commonly used in lead guitar, so practice the following example slowly with a metronome each day until you can play it perfectly, then gradually increase your speed.

Another good way to develop your picking is to play the scale picking each note twice.
