Permutation is the process of changing the starting point of a sequence of numerals or notes in order to discover the possible variations within a particular number or note group. The number of possible permutations is dependant upon the number of numerals or notes within the original sequence.
E.g., the number sequence "1 2 3 4" has 4 possible permutations:
The paradiddle is a sequence of eight notes. Therefore, the number of possible permutations of a paradiddle is eight:
The most commonly used permutations are numbers 3 and 6.
If the right hand is moved around the toms in a clockwise direction using the sticking pattern of permutation 6, the following example is created.
If the right hand starts again on tom 1 but moves in an anticlockwise direction, the following example is created.
