Drummers, unlike most instrumentalists, cannot hold a note for a specific length of time. Therefore, some rhythmic figures can sound identical when played on a drumkit, yet be notated differently. The following examples show 3 ways of notating identically sounding rhythmic figures.
Examples 939 and 940 are 16 bar syncopated reading exercises. It is very important to count through these exercises as written. Reading syncopation is difficult and takes time. Working out a bar or a few bars at a time and then progressing to the next section works effectively.
