Square Pegs in Round Holes

Lesson 2/18 | Study Time: 5 Min
Square Pegs in Round Holes

Square Pegs in Round Holes

Square Pegs in Round Holes is another solo in the Ragtime style. It is in the key of E and consists of two sections, a four bar intro and ending.

At several stages in this piece a single note run is played on the treble strings. This occurs in the intro, at the end of the second section and the final "tag". Use the right hand fingers to play all notes in these parts.

Techniques such as the hammer and slide are used extensively throughout this solo. Perhaps the most interesting effect in this piece is the slide on the fifth string combined with the double-note bend at the beginning of the first section (see chord diagram 11). This slide, from the second fret to the seventh fret should be played steadily and smoothly, keeping the pressure even throughout the slide. Once the chord shape is in position, bend the second string upwards with the third finger of the left hand. It is important to keep the other notes firmly pressed against the fretboard, only the second string should bend. Listen to the recording several times to get the correct timing and feel for this phrase.

All the chord shapes used in this solo are shown here. Study each diagram carefully as you work your way through this piece with attention given to the suggested left hand fingering.
