Heavy Duty

Lesson 2/26 | Study Time: 5 Min
Heavy Duty

Heavy Duty

Heavy Duty is another progression in the key of A Major, but this track has a distinct Heavy Rock sound to it. The accompanying rhythm part is included here. Study the chords used and the order in which they are played, then play through the part slowly until you feel comfortable with the chord changes.

Minor Pentatonic Scale - Rock Guitar Pattern Three

Rock Guitar Pattern Three is positioned slightly higher up the fretboard from Pattern Two. The next diagram illustrates Pattern Three and its position on the fretboard in relation to Patterns One and Two.

The key notes of this pattern are found on the second and fifth strings. The pattern shown here is in the key of A.

The following lick is typical of a Pattern Three lick. This lick particularly highlights the notes within the pattern where a bend can be applied. This lick is also strongly based around the key note (A) on the second string.

Rock Guitar Pattern Three - Additional Notes

The next diagram highlights the most commonly used notes in Rock Pattern Three and introduces two additional notes which are often added to this pattern.

The following lick is the first four bars of Heavy Duty. It makes use of the additional notes that can be added to Rock Guitar Pattern Three, as highlighted in the previous diagram

This solo uses a combination of Rock Patterns Three and Two. A variety of left hand techniques are employed including hammer-ons, pull-offs, bends, vibrato and pick tremolo.
