Soul to Soul is a Funk/Rock progression with a distinct "soul" feel. The main structure of the piece consists of a two bar chord cycle that features the Am7, F9 and E9 chords. An off-beat sixteenth note rhythm is used and a middle eight (bars 9 - 16) adds variety to the chord progression before returning to the original chord structure.
The Natural Minor scale (or "pure" minor scale) is another scale that features in some Rock solos. This scale has a "classical" sound to it. An A Minor Pentatonic scale would be suitable to play a solo over the chord progression in exercise 40, however a Natural Minor scale would also make an interesting alternative.
The A Natural Minor scale contains the same notes as the C Major scale therefore these two scales are said to be related. It is also worth noting that the A Natural Minor scale is the same as the A Minor Pentatonic scale except two extra notes are added (B and F). For more information on these scales see the section on scales at the end of this book.
The two most common Natural Minor scale patterns, Pattern One and Pattern Four are highlighted here. You will notice that these patterns can be compared to the Minor Pentatonic patterns that have featured throughout this book. Memorize each pattern, keeping in mind that the patterns are the same as the Minor Pentatonic patterns except two extra notes are added.
The following lick is played within the A Natural Minor scale - Pattern One.
A Natural Minor scale - Pattern Four is used for this lick.
Soul To Soul uses a variety of rhythms and left hand techniques. The solo begins within the Natural Minor scale - Pattern One and finishes in Pattern Four.
