Gimme Five is probably the most challenging solo so far in this book. This solo is in the key of F and uses all five Rock patterns.
The rhythm track to Gimme Five is a 16 bar progression consisting of two different sections. The second section involves some off-beat chord changes that will require careful phrasing within the solo.
It is important to note that Rock Guitar Pattern Five connects with Pattern One which connects with Pattern Two etc. This is shown in the next diagram.
The example given is the key of A. Notice that Pattern One in this key can be played in either the fifth position (frets 5 - 8) or the 17th position (frets 17 - 20).
The following lick is an example of connecting between Patterns Four and Five to Pattern One in the key of A. Triplets are used for this lick.
The next lick connects Pattern One in the key of A to Patterns Five and Four. This time sixteenth notes are used.
In order to play the solo to Gimme Five you will need to familiarize yourself with the key of F. The following diagram highlights all the patterns that are used for the solo. From this diagram you will notice that Pattern One is located on the 1st fret and then repeats on the 13th fret.
The solo to Gimme Five begins with Pattern One in the 1st position (frets 1 - 4) and gradually moves up through the patterns to Pattern One (frets 13 - 16). The solo finishes within Pattern Two (frets 14 - 18).
