The next solo uses a common eight bar Rock-Blues progression played twice. Straight Eight 58 is in the key of E and uses the I, IV and V chords from that key (E, A and B). Use a strict "straight eighth" note rhythmic pattern for the rhythm part.
Rock Guitar Pattern Four is positioned slightly higher up the fretboard from Pattern Three.
The following diagram illustrates Pattern Four and its position on the fretboard in relation to Patterns One, Two and Three in the key of A. The key notes of this pattern are found on the third and fifth strings.
As Straight Eight 58 is in the key of E you will need to become familiar with Rock Pattern Four in the key of E, positioned between the 7th and 10th frets.
Straight Eight 58 uses a popular alternative fingering for Pattern Four that incorporates the bass string notes from Pattern Three.
The following lick (bars 3 - 7 of Straight Eight 58) uses almost all the notes that make up the alternative fingering for Pattern Four, as highlighted in the previous diagram.
The following solo uses a variety of left hand techniques and rhythms. All four patterns featured so far throughout this book are used in the solo including Pattern One in the key of E that contains open strings (bar 7).
