Combining Scales and Sounds

Combining Scales and Sounds

So far, all the licks presented have come from individual scales – either the minor pentatonic, the Blues scale or the major pentatonic. However, Blues players combine sounds from all these scales, often within the one lick. The following licks combine sounds from all the scales used in the book so far.

This lick works as a four measure intro to a shuffle Blues in C. It is played mainly in the E form, but moves briefly up into the D form in the 3rd measure. The progression shown here is typical of many intros used in Blues. Try transposing it to other keys by moving it to different places on the fretboard.
