The following exercises are invaluable in establishing an independence between the thumb and fingers of the right hand.
Ex. 34: Grip i, m and a on the third, second and first strings respectively, making sure the right hand is correctly positioned and relaxed. Pluck the sixth, fifth and fourth string with p (free stroke) as notated, using the circular plucking action as described in Lesson Two.
Without stopping the above exercise, commence Ex. 35 by including i, m and a with free strokes. This must not cause any interference to the action or sound of p.
Again without stopping p , commence exercise 36 (playing chords with i ,m and a).
Practice these exercises slowly and strongly, intermixing each but without stopping so as to establish a steady rhythm and flow between each exercise.
Chord shapes may be substituted for open strings for variety.
