The Metronome
A metronome is a mechanical or electronic device that divides time into equal beats by producing a ticking or beeping sound. The number of beats per minute is adjustable so that you can vary the speed at which you wish to sing or play a piece of music.
The metronome has three functions:
- It indicates the tempo to sing at by sounding the number of beats per minute, e.g., 3 = 60 sounds one beat (quarter note) per second.
- It acts as a control for your timing so that you do not rush or slow down when singing a melody.
- It is a good idea to learn new songs and choral works at a slow tempo. The metronome enables you to then gradually increase the tempo, keeping exactly the same rhythm, until you can sing the piece correctly along with the recording.
