It takes three elements to sing Jazz well – vocal dexterity, a well trained ear and a knowledge of chords, scales, and arpeggios. All great Jazz singers have these elements. The best way to start singing Jazz is to imitate great singers and gradually add in more adventurous notes and techniques as you learn them. The following example is a Jazz style Blues sung with the wordless syllables of scat singing. Each phrase is followed by a space for you to repeat what you hear. Use the syllables shown here until you are comfortable with each phrase, then try using other syllables and improvise your own phrases.
