One more rhythm worth looking at is the Triplet. A triplet is a group of three notes played in the time of two. For a detailed study of triplets, see Progressive Blues Lead Guitar Method. Triplets may be applied to notes of any value, the most common being eighth note triplets. They are demonstrated in these next two examples.
Another triplet grouping is the quarter note triplet, which is three quarter notes played in the time of two. These may be difficult at first. Try working up to them by first using eighth note triplets, Then accent the parts of the beat where the quarter note triplets would fall and finally play the quarter note triplets on their own.
Here is an example demonstrating the use of quarter note triplets.
One final grouping is the 16th note triplet. These are usually fairly quick, being three 16th notes played in the time of two. The next two examples demonstrate the use of 16th note triplets.
