Now let’s return to one of the sounds used earlier in the book, the 9th chord. Here are two more voicings of the 9th which are commonly used. Neither of these voicings contains the root note. (For a more in depth look at 9th chords, see Progressive Funk and R&B Guitar Method.)
This groove uses the first shape shown here, along with some other 9th chord shapes.
This one is a 12 Bar Blues using the second shape. This shape is the same as a major 6th chord played two frets higher. The only difference is the position of the root note.
