Swing Rhythm
The next song you will learn is a traditional song made famous by Louis Armstrong called St. James Infirmary. This song has a distinct swing rhythm. Many Jazz and Blues songs use this type of feel.
Swing rhythm is when two eighth notes notated together are played as the 1 st and 3rd parts of a triplet, indicated by the symbol 6 = z above the music. Listen to the recording to hear the correct phrasing of the swing rhythm used in the song St. James Infirmary.
