Ragtime was the earliest form of popular music, originating at the end of the 19th century in the southern United States. Ragtime was predominantly a piano style that soon evolved into the early forms of Jazz.
The following example is a Ragtime guitar piece. Red Pepper Rag also contains first and second endings. Play to the first ending, (Z), then go back to the beginning. The second time you play through the song, play the second ending (X) instead of the first. In the last notated bar, the instruction D.C. at Coda is written. This means that you play the song again from the beginning until you reach the coda sign (v) and then jump to the second coda sign at the end of the piece.
