Progressive Jazz Lead Guitar Method takes an innovative approach to learning Jazz improvisation on guitar. While most books on improvisation assume the student is already quite an accomplished guitarist, this one requires only a rudimentary knowledge of playing in the open and first positions. Beginning with the C major scale in the open position, the student is quickly introduced to Jazz sounds and phrases, along with a simple method for playing over any major key chord progression.
As well as knowing what notes to play, the other essential element in Jazz improvisation is mastery of rhythm, particularly swing rhythms. In many methods, this is already assumed, or not touched on until much later in the learning process, but in this book, it is introduced very early on, and continued throughout the book.
The later sections of the book deal with a system of fingerings which cover the whole fretboard, and a demonstration of the use of chord arpeggios and modes both within keys and modulating.
To ensure you develop a good time feel right from the start, it is recommended that you use a metronome or drum machine when practicing all the examples in the book. If you are serious about music, a good teacher can often help you progress much quicker than you can on your own.
Keep practicing, keep playing and have fun, Peter Gelling.
