Arpeggios and Chord Progressions

Once you have a basic understanding of arpeggios, it is important to practice them over chord progressions as well as around the cycle or chromatically. The following example shows a 12 Bar Blues progression in the key of C minor played entirely with arpeggios.

Notice how all the notes fit the progression perfectly. This must be so, because the notes of the arpeggios are identical to the notes of the chords used in the accompaniment. Being able to make your lines fit any given chord progression is one of the most important elements of Jazz playing. Using arpeggios is one of the most common ways of achieving this.
