Eighth notes, dotted eighth notes and eighth note rests, and sixteenth notes and sixteenth note rests are combined to notate certain rhythms in a way which minimalizes written rests. This ultimately makes reading easier, but can be a little confusing at first.
The following list shows the accepted notation of such combinations and their rhythmic equivalents notated using only sixteenth notes and sixteenth note rests. Each example is one beat (¼ note) in length.
